Quick and powerful, Eliaquim Mangala is one of Europe’s most promising young defenders and signed for City in August 2014.
Versatile, with fine positional sense and the ability to play the ball out from deep, the Frenchman also poses a threat from set-pieces and is admired for his tackling.
Although it took a while for the centre-back to adapt to life in the Premier League, a run of games towards the end of the 2014/15 campaign served to help him to adjust and he played an important role in the six-game winning streak that concluded the year, starting every match.
The 24-year-old arrived at the Etihad Stadium with an impressive CV, having enjoyed successful spells at Standard Liege and Porto before making the move to Manchester.
In his first professional season, he helped the Belgian side to the league and Supercup double and burst into the senior side the following year.
He would go on to make 77 league appearances for the club and ended his career there on a high, netting the opening goal in his side’s Belgian Cup final triumph before completing a move to Porto.
During his time at the club, Mangala played against City before going on to win the title twice. He also captured the eye of Manuel Pellegrini, who was managing Malaga at the time.
